Anyone who smokes, discontinue smoking for at least one week before and two weeks after hair transplant surgery. There have been a few cases of large crusts which developed in smokers after surgery. This is because the nicotine causes spasm of the blood vessels in the middle of the scalp. These crusts result in poor healing and sometimes loss of grafts under the crusts. Below are pictures of a patient who had this, and you can see the crusts.
